IDC believes that total mobile phone shipments will reach 1.7 billion units in 2012, up 8.2% from the 1.6 billion mobile phones shipped in 2011. From there, mobile phone shipments will grow at a CAGR of 6.9% until 2016 and reach 2.2 billion units shipped in the final year of our forecast period.

"What will change is the profile of mobile phone shipment volumes annually. Smartphones will account for a larger proportion of total volumes each year as vendors become increasingly smartphone centric and less feature phone centric. In addition, the mobile phone market is heading for faster and more efficient data speeds, with 4G LTE coming on stronger during the middle and later years of our forecast period. Coincidentally, this will be driven by smartphones. This leaves plenty of opportunity for growth in differentiation for multiple players in the mobile phone ecosystem."
