Site commemorates the heroic nature of Terry Fox's journey

(firmenpresse) - ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR -- (Marketwire) -- 04/12/12 -- The Honourable Peter Kent, Canada's Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, in partnership with the City of St. John's and the St. John's Port Authority, today officially opened the Terry Fox Mile 0 Site, featuring a bronze statue of Terry Fox, on the shore of St. John's harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador.

"The lessons that Terry Fox taught us continue to inspire Canadians today. Lessons about how ordinary people can have extraordinary courage and determination, and lessons about how there is no limit to what we can accomplish," said Minister Kent. "The Terry Fox Mile 0 Site is a place where Canadians could come to reflect on their own dreams, share their own hopes, find their own source of courage and determination, and personally connect with the legacy of a genuine Canadian hero."

"On this day thirty-two years ago Terry touched the Atlantic Ocean with his artificial foot in St. John's harbour, beginning a journey that inspired Canadians and people from around the world," said Mr. Rolly Fox, father of Terry Fox. "We are delighted and thankful that the site where he began his Marathon of Hope has been transformed into a place for people to come and be inspired by his legacy, determination and courage."

As Canadians walk through the Terry Fox Mile 0 site they will be inspired by Terry's extraordinary story. The site includes a life-like sculpture of Terry Fox dipping his foot in the water of St. John's harbour, as well as two quotes and design work from the winners of the Parks Canada "What Terry Fox Means to Me" youth challenge. The site also features Interpretive panels and evocative landscaping that all work in unison to convey Terry's legacy and spirit.

Two years ago, the Government of Canada, the City of St. John's and the St. John's Port Authority announced that, together, they would create a commemorative site, centred around a Terry Fox statue, near where Terry started his Marathon of Hope.

"Newfoundlanders and Labradorians share a special connection with Terry Fox because this is the place where he started his incredible Marathon of Hope," said the Honourable Peter Penashue, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador. "We take great pride in the support this province showed Terry as he ran through our communities, and we are forever grateful to him for providing us the opportunity to share in his journey and support him in achieving his goals."

The Government of Canada invites Canadians of all ages and of all walks of life to visit the Terry Fox Mile 0 Site. This special place provides Canadians with a place to believe in their dreams, to share their hopes, and to personally connect with the legacy of this treasured Canadian icon.
