Going Green: the New Wave in Swimming Pool Construction and Maintenance

Though only a small ripple in the market, 'green' swimming pools are gaining in popularity and carving their own niche in the market.
In 2011, there were a total of approximately 9.86 million swimming pools in the United States, reflecting a near 3.6% increase from 2010 and up almost 13.9% from 2007 when the total number of pools rested close to 8.66 million. The increase in the total number of pools from 2007 to 2011 was inspired by a growing number of types and 'green' pool construction, while the number of commercial pools declined during the same period.

The costs of building a are comparable to traditionally built pools, although the real savings are made after the pool is in operation and needs less electricity and fewer chemicals to stay clean.
There is also increased consumer interest in swimming pool automation systems, not only because they help to decrease the amount of time pool owners need to spend fussing with their pools, but also because they help reduce the amount of electricity needed to operate the pool -- some report up to a 75% savings in pool energy costs. Cartridge filters are being purchased more often over granular-type filters as they are more energy and water efficient.
Robotic cleaners use up to 90% less energy than other types of and help to lessen water use. Fewer chemicals are also needed when using these automatic cleaners. Solar-powered pool equipment and solar-powered pool covers also help to save money and reduce operating costs. In addition, the swimming pool lighting market is experiencing a lot of interest in its LED lights, which are at least 30% more efficient than halogen lights and last about 25 times longer. Meanwhile, salt systems and ozone technologies are being chosen by consumers over chlorine.
