(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 04/17/12 -- The federal government's responsible resource development plan will not only ensure environmentally responsible growth in Canada's resource sector, it will create the certainty required to boost investment, generate business and create job opportunities throughout the manufacturing, technology and service industries, according to Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME).

CME President & CEO Jayson Myers issued the following statement in response to today's announcement by Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver:

CME strongly supports the government's objectives to ensure a simple and straightforward approval process for resource development projects. Greater predictability and a more timely review process will encourage business investment - an important driver of economic growth at a time when governments and consumers face major spending constraints.

Reducing duplication in the project review process only makes sense if we are going to realize economic benefits as soon as possible without diluting the environmental assessments that are necessary for responsible development. Stronger environmental safeguards should also ensure Canadians that the project approval process can been accelerated without jeopardizing environmental management.

And, clearly, Aboriginal communities not only need to be consulted, but also actively involved and engaged in project approvals, development, as well as business and job growth opportunities arising from the hundreds of billions of dollars slated to be invested in Canadian resource developments over the next 10 years.

One project, one review, in a defined time limit will help expedite responsible resource development in Canada. But, we also need to consider the jobs that will be created in Canada's manufacturing, technology, and services sectors as a result of those projects. And we need to keep in mind the tax revenues and royalties that will be raised by resource development which will, in turn, help finance the public services that all Canadians expect from their governments across the country.

Responsible resource development will give Canada a competitive economic edge over the next decade. We must leverage these investments to develop jobs in globally competitive businesses throughout the supply chains linked to resource development. We must also ensure that these projects are environmentally responsible. Today's announcement goes a long way towards achieving those objectives.
