Socialization Is Reported as Key in Getting Sheltered Dogs Ready for Adoption, as It Boosts Their Health and Increases Their Ability to Interact Positively With People and Animals; No Leash Needed Socializes Dogs to Enhance All Aspects of Their Health

(firmenpresse) - ST. LOUIS, MO -- (Marketwire) -- 04/18/12 -- The Chicago Tribune recently released an that highlights the importance of socialization for dogs. No Leash Needed, a St. Louis-based dog training, day camp, and boarding facility, uses socialization to improve the health of clients' dogs. But the facility is taking the benefits of socialization further by using it to help foster dogs prepare for their new homes.

In the aforementioned article, reporter Bridget Doyle discusses the positive effects of a new outdoor space at Chicago's Commission on Animal Care and Control. This large area, made up of four individual 100 by 40 feet, grass-covered areas separated by a chain-link fence, provides space for dogs to run and socialize. After spending a great deal of time in their kennels, this socialization is key in ensuring that the dogs retain the interactive skills they need to be successfully placed in a new home.

"This is physical, mental, and behavioral stimulation for the dogs," commented Janice Triptow, who is the lead trainer and behavior consultant for Safe Humane Chicago. "A lot of shelter dogs become kennel-crazed. The outdoor play and exercise will help them maintain themselves in a shelter setting."

By maintaining their dispositions, instead of succumbing to "kennel-craze," these dogs have a better chance of being adopted. When potential new owners come to see the dogs available, they are often looking for playful animals that get along well with children and other pets. Without the proper amount of socialization, the dogs will not retain these social skills.

"We have seen the positive effects of socialization in a safe off-leash environment first hand. works with local rescues and clients to socialize dogs that have been given up for various reasons. Just recently, we just finished working with a foster in an effort to boost her socialization. The puppy was set to be euthanized at an animal control facility, but socialization and training has made her a great pet to a new family," commented Shannon Mayfield, co-owner of No Leash Needed. "By socializing foster dogs, we are able to help them find homes in which they safely interact with kids and other pets. This is, ultimately, what many people who adopt dogs are looking for."

knows that proper socialization is important in preparing shelter and foster dogs for their future homes. Additionally, the company focuses on providing this socialization for its clients' pets. With plenty of play time, in conjunction with reward-based training methods, the organization teaches dogs the crucial skills they need to interact with both humans and other canines.
