According to a regulatory filing by Verizon wireless the company is currently having spectrum shortages in certain markets. Rival carrier AT&T had sought to acquire T-Mobile to help with their spectrum shortages, but withdrew the offer after the federal government sued to block the deal.
"It really is a big deal," said Nancee Ruzicka, Denver-based director of strategy for market research firm Stratecast. "No matter what you're willing to pay or what you're willing to do, it's almost going to become that gridlock situation where this is all there is. It's a physics issue. There's only so much spectrum."

The Board of Directors of Verizon Communications Inc. declared a quarterly dividend of 50 cents per outstanding share, unchanged from the previous quarter. The dividend is payable on May 1, 2012, to Verizon Communications shareowners of record at the close of business on April 10, 2012. Verizon has approximately 2.7 million shareowners and approximately 2.8 billion shares of common stock outstanding. The company made $5.6 billion in dividend payments in 2011.
Sprint Nextel Corporation will release its financial results for the first quarter 2012 on Wednesday, April 25. The results will be posted at their website at approximately 7 a.m. ET. Sprint Nextel management will host a conference call at 8 a.m. ET to discuss the results.
