Five Energy Saving Tips from First Utility

First Utility's five energy saving tips in full:
1. Don't leave TVs, DVD players, stereos or computers on standby
To cut down on energy, avoid leaving appliances on standby and remember not to leave mobile phones, MP3 players and laptops on charge unnecessarily.
2. Only use the energy you need
Only fill the kettle with the amount of water you need, but remember to cover the element if you're using an electric kettle. For washing machines, tumble driers and dishwashers always aim for a full load if you can't use a half-load or economy programme.
3. Use energy efficient light bulbs
Energy efficient light bulbs last 12 times longer than standard bulbs. Trade your ordinary light bulbs for energy saving ones and for each bulb you fit you can save up to GBP 9 on your annual electricity bill.
4. Tame your heating and save 10%
The most important thing is to keep warm in winter, but turning your thermostat down by 1 degree C could cut your heating bills by up to 10%. And if you're going away for winter, leave the thermostat on a low setting to provide protection from freezing at minimum cost. By making a small adjustment to your heating you could save around GBP 30 a year.
5. Don't let your heating escape
Double-glazing cuts heat loss through windows by 50% and could reduce your heating bill by up to GBP 40 a year. Just closing your curtains at dusk will stop heat escaping through windows.
First Utility recently struck a partnership with US smart grid company Opower to offer services such as text messages or emails providing UK customers with personalised tips on energy saving. The service was touched on and welcomed by Nick Clegg in his recent speech on the green economy and could go live as early as June 2012.
