Magazine Publisher First Canadian to Win American Reintegration Award

Magpie Media Inc. - After 15 years, the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare (NCCBH) has honoured its first Canadian, Bill MacPhee, with a Reintegration Award.
The Reintegration Awards were started by the NCCBH in 1997 to celebrate the lives of those living with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, as well as the achievements of those who have dedicated their lives to helping people with mental illness.
Bill MacPhee, CEO and founder of Magpie Media Inc., was the second-prize recipient of a Reintegration Award under the Mentorship category. Presented April 16 in Chicago Illinois, MacPhee is the first Canadian who has ever been honoured with a Reintegration Award.
MacPhee was diagnosed with schizophrenia when he was 24 and struggled with his illness for many years, even attempting suicide once. In 1994 he turned his life around with the decision to start a publication that would help others affected by schizophrenia. For 18 years MacPhee has published SZ Magazine, the only magazine in North America dedicated to schizophrenia. He also travels across Canada and the US as a speaker and advocate for mental illness.
Today, his magazine reaches 180,000 people affected by schizophrenia in North America.
"I have been living with schizophrenia for half of my life, and have won many awards for my work in mental health, but it is a privilege to be the first Canadian honoured with this prestigious award," said MacPhee.
The event was sponsored by Eli Lilly. The award includes a $5,000 grant, which MacPhee is donating to the Shatter the Stigma campaign in Niagara.
