Produced by the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, Delaware River Day encourages conscientious boating practices, stresses the importance of marine safety measures and encourages waterway preservation along the Delaware River. Delaware River Day takes place at the Penn's Landing Marina located directly behind the Independence Seaport Museum on Columbus Blvd. at Walnut Street. Delaware River Day is a FREE event with fun and interactive activities such as life jacket fitting, musical entertainment, free face painting for the kids and vessel tours.

The highlight of Delaware River Day will be a visit from and free tours of the It is one of four ocean going hopper dredges owned by and the only dredge in the world with triple capacity for direct pumpout, bottom discharge, and sidecasting or boom discharge. The McFarland is over 300 feet long and operated by a 45 member civilian crew.

There will also be a visit from , the Coast Guard Auxiliary's National Ambassador for Boating and Water Safety. "Coastie, the Safety Boat" is a Youth Education, Boating, and Water Safety Program. Coastie is an animated robotic cartoon character in appearance, and is very mobile. He has navigation and searchlights, a rotating beacon, a siren, an air horn, and eyes and eyelids that move meaningfully.

Coastie also has his own built in squirt gun that the kids just love. Statistics from all over the country show that tragically, hundreds of children, who could have been saved, drown each year in water related accidents! Delaware River Day includes participating maritime organizations from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware and is the only event of its kind in the area this season.

from 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. will take place off the South Quay at the Penn's Landing Marina and will include the McAllister Tug, the Moran Tug, the K-Sea Tug and the Tug Jupiter (2009 winner for "best decorated") and Tug Wilmington, who took home the trophy for "toughest tug" last year.

Along with $5 discounted admission all day to the Independence Seaport Museum, Delaware River Day, the will provide literature on kayaking and swan boats. The America Ship 484 will participate again this year, while the will distribute information. The PA Fish and Boat Commission will provide publications on the importance of Pennsylvania's aquatic resources.

Public Programming at Penn's Landing would not be possible without the continued support of corporate partners such as PECO, Verizon, Pennsylvania Lottery, Coca-Cola Refreshments of Philadelphia, and the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation, all of whom are committed to serving the Greater Philadelphia community.

The 2012 Summer Program of Free Events at Penn's Landing is funded and produced by the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DRWC). All events produced by DRWC are FREE to the public on the RiverStage on the Great Plaza, Philadelphia's premier waterfront entertainment destination, and at Philadelphia's newest park, the Race Street Pier.

DRWC is a nonprofit corporation created in January 2009, exclusively for the benefit of the City of Philadelphia and its citizens. The fundamental purpose of DRWC is to design, develop and manage the central Delaware River waterfront in Philadelphia. DRWC is transforming the waterfront into a vibrant destination location for recreational, cultural, and commercial activities for the residents and visitors of Philadelphia.
