(firmenpresse) - SEBASTOPOL, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 05/02/12 -- Maker Faire, the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth, will be hosting its fifth annual Education Day, sponsored by Intel, on Thursday, May 17, at the San Mateo County Event Center. Education Day is a unique field trip experience for local K-12 students and teachers to get a sneak peek at some of the Maker Faire exhibits and workshops via a behind-the-scenes tour. Two thousand teachers and students are expected to attend Education Day events.

Maker Faire has joined forces with Intel Corporation to inspire the next generation of makers with this special preview opportunity. Intel invests more than a $100 million a year in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs. Research shows students become most inspired and dedicated to science and technology when they do real-world projects that have a meaningful impact.

Intel Labs, plus seven individual makers, and more than 100 Intel volunteers are participating in Maker Faire. Intel Labs focuses on defining new user experiences and computing platforms, and the lab's innovations are expected to help re-imagine how computing is experienced in the future.

The "Make Your World" booth, cobranded and designed by Intel Labs with , will encourage kids to start thinking about interactivity in their everyday environments. The booth will have a series of making activities plus hands-on workshops, giveaways, and interactive displays.

One of Maker Faire's Goldsmith Sponsors, Oracle, will be highlighting its 21st century learning efforts at the festival this year. Oracle's interactive Java Zone will bring to life storyboarding, 3D animation building, device programming, body motion sensors and more using Java technology. In addition, Oracle supported initiatives ALICE and Greenfoot will be showcased in the DIY Learning area of Maker Faire. Both initiatives are aimed at making Java programming accessible -- and fun! -- to students and will be available at the event for young people to see and learn for themselves.

On Thursday's Education day, held from 11am - 2pm, students and teachers will take 90-minute tours around the festival to visit select makers, participate in activities, and get a bird's eye view of how Maker Faire set-up happens. From 4pm - 7pm, local teachers will be welcomed to the "DIY Learning: The New School Pavilion" showcasing ed-tech ideas and tools that can transform classrooms into focal points of learning by doing.

"Our goal with Education Day at Maker Faire is to reach young people and show them the power of making and innovating," says Dale Dougherty, founding editor and publisher of MAKE magazine and Maker Faire. "At Education Day, students will meet makers who, for example, as kids were blasting rockets and now as adults do high-altitude balloon science. They will hear all kinds of stories like that from our makers that will open their eyes to new and exciting ways of learning and doing. And it will give them hope and inspiration about what's possible for their future."

Education Day tours can be reserved by registering at . Group tickets admit 12-15 students and up to 2 adult chaperones for the 90 minute preview tour. The cost is $75.00 per group and tickets are still available. Details on Education Day, tours, cost, parking, etc. can be found at .
