26 Percent of SMB Respondents Say They Will Buy Fewer Laptops This Year in Favor of Tablets

(firmenpresse) - AUSTIN, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 05/03/12 -- iGR's new tablet research shows that approximately 52 percent of U.S. small-medium business employees currently own and use tablet devices. This is according to a new survey of over 400 SMBs in the U.S.

Furthermore, approximately 47 percent of SMB respondents said that they use their tablet for both work and personal matters. Those lower on the corporate ladder (directors, managers, staff members) were more likely to report using their tablet for personal matters, whereas those higher on the corporate ladder were more likely to report using their tablet for work.

In addition, approximately 24 percent of SMBs surveyed indicated supplying corporate tablet devices to employees as part of an official policy. And approximately 26 percent of respondents indicated that their company would be buying fewer or far fewer laptops as a result of their tablet purchases in 2012, which iGR believe signifies the continuation of the trend towards increased tablet use and away from laptops.

"The enterprise arena in particular is one area in which tablets are anticipated to climb. There has been significant press generated by large corporations (e.g., Dupont, Wells Fargo, United Airlines, American Airlines, etc.) who are using tablet devices to improve, augment or replace existing business processes and practices," said Iain Gillott, president and founder of iGR, a market research consultancy focused on the wireless & mobile industry. "But as our new research clearly shows, tablets are in wide use in small and medium sized businesses as well. Given that tablets are negatively impacting laptop purchases, this trend looks to continue."

Small and medium businesses (SMBs), like larger corporations, utilize a variety of devices and technologies ranging from smartphones, to desktop PCs, to mobile hotspots, to wired datacom infrastructure. However, SMBs, which iGR generally defines as companies with between 10 to 500 employees, have unique experiences when it comes to computing devices.

After surveying approximately 400 SMB employees, iGR found that the IT departments in such companies were most likely to oversee the purchase, management, maintenance and support of desktop computers (90%), and laptops and netbooks (89%); by comparison, approximately 55 percent of SMBs managed and maintained tablet devices.

The most reported reason for purchasing additional tablets in 2012 was "substituting for laptops" (31.9%), followed by "workforce is increasing" (31.0%), though the majority of companies with plans to buy tablets indicated that their plans to buy laptops remained "about the same." Perhaps only a portion of laptops are being substituted or enterprises are gradually phasing in tablet devices.

iGR has published two new research reports, and , that detail how tablets are used and purchased in small- to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in the U.S., and how tablets are impacting the use and purchase of laptops. The following questions are addressed in the new research reports:

What are the characteristics of SMBs?

What is a tablet?

What is the current state of the U.S. tablet market?

What types (brand and OS) of tablets are in use across U.S. SMBs?

Which SMB employees are using tablets?

How are SMB employees using tablets?

What connectivity options are SMB tablet users employing?

What role does the IT department in a SMB have in terms of device management?

How many SMBs currently use laptops?

How many SMB employees and which types of employees, are using laptops?

Do SMBs plan to purchase laptops in 2012? If so, why?

Do SMBs plan to purchase tablets in 2012? If so, why?

What impact, if any, are tablets having on laptops in SMBs?
