"At , we try to craft each student's program according to their strengths and weaknesses," commented Stewart. "If a student is strong in a subject, we put that student in a strong track (or honors track) and if they are weak, we put them in a more supportive track that they can excel in if they work hard. They can be in a different track in English or math or a foreign language (Spanish, Mandarin, French, or American Sign Language). The goal is to put a student in a class in which they can come out on top if they work hard. Success breeds motivation and desire for more success. It [the workload] has to be realistic but also achievable."
In order to sustain such a rather unique curriculum, York Prep has created a scheduling system that meets the needs of individualized schedules. "The students can request class changes and the program is flexible enough to do this in just one subject, since all the grade math classes, for instance, are taught at the same time," explained Stewart. "By the eleventh grade the students choose tracks in many subjects, and in the senior year they can try different classes (shopping week) to see which class they want to be in. By that time the strength of the classes are similar but students choose the teacher they think they can work with the best. Crafted education is certainly something we should always strive for. Students are never all alike and need to be treated as individuals."
York Prep's students have achieved a great deal of success by following this personalized learning plan. The majority of students are accepted into their first choice colleges -- including schools within the Ivy League.
