Margi Booth Wins Prestigious John W. Hill Award; Maria Russell Named as Philip Dorf Award Winner and Barri Rafferty Presented With President's Award

(firmenpresse) - NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 05/09/12 -- The New York Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA-NY) today announced the 2012 winners of the chapter's three annual awards. Each year public relations professionals who have shown outstanding leadership and contributions to the industry are recognized with the John W. Hill Award, the Philip Dorf Award and the President's Award. The awards will be presented at the Chapter's 25th Annual Big Apple gala awards ceremony on Thursday, May 24, 2012. The ceremony honors public relations professionals in the tri-state area for individual accomplishments and execution of outstanding campaigns.
Margi Booth, CEO of M Booth, will receive the 2012 John W. Hill Award, the chapter's most prestigious individual award. Named for the founder of Hill+Knowlton Strategies and conferred annually since 1977, it is presented for leadership in the practice of public relations, demonstration of the highest standards of ethical conduct, and service to the public.
"Margi is a true pioneer, creating one of the most innovative and forward-thinking public relations firms today," said Harry R. Zlokower, president of PRSA-NY. "Throughout her career she has led cutting-edge campaigns and built one of the most impressive client rosters in the market. We are proud to present her with this award."
"I am honored to receive the John Hill Award from PRSA-NY," added Margi Booth, CEO of M Booth and 2012 John W. Hill Award recipient. "The award has a great deal of meaning for me because it recognizes the importance of ethical behavior in our business, an issue that I believe is so critical to how our industry is viewed."
Booth founded M Booth & Associates in 1985, aiming to create innovative communications programs for highly respected consumer, lifestyle, and corporate brands. Under her leadership, the agency has represented clients including American Express, Unilever, GE, Michelin, Disney, jcpenney and Foursquare, among others.
Prior to M Booth, Booth was a vice president at Ruder Finn, heading their broadcast department, and then became president of Public Interest Public Relations. In 2009, she sold M Booth to Next Fifteen Communications Group, and currently serves on its board. She is a recipient of the coveted New York Women in Communications Matrix Award for career advancement in public relations, was inducted into the YWCA's Hall of Women Achievers, and was named one of the 50 most powerful women in PR by PR Week.
Maria P. Russell, APR, PRSA Fellow and professor of public relations and director of executive education programs at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, will receive the Philip Dorf Award. Instituted in 1995, this award recognizes individuals who have an outstanding record of mentoring. It honors the memory of Philip Dorf who, during his long and distinguished career, was an inspiration and mentor to countless young professionals.
As chair of the Newhouse public relations department, Russell oversaw its tremendous growth and innovative programming, including the creation of an interdisciplinary, limited/residency distance learning program for mid-career public relations professionals, the school's first executive education venture. In August 2008, she assumed executive education responsibilities for the entire school.
Russell serves on the governing boards of The Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations at the University of Alabama, the PRSA Foundation, PRSA's College of Fellows, and is co-author of a book on the media coverage of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.
Russell has been a member of the Commission on Public Relations Education for more than 12 years. Prior to joining Newhouse, she was vice president of communications, Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce; consultant for the Greater Syracuse Program; director of community relations for the United Way of Central New York; and editorial assistant/writer for the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry.
Barri Rafferty, a past-president of PRSA-NY and an active board member, was selected for the 2012 President's Award, which honors outstanding contributions to PRSA-NY. As senior partner and director at Ketchum, Rafferty is a leader among large agency heads, providing exceptional support, advice and time to the chapter. She is a member of Ketchum's executive committee and oversees the firm's global digital transformation, including oversight of Ketchum Digital and the agency's global network of digital strategists.
Rafferty counsels key clients of Ketchum on integrated communications, branding initiatives, and corporate reputation, and leveraging experiential, online and mainstream communications tactics. During her tenure, Rafferty has worked with many industry-leading companies such as Procter & Gamble, Pfizer, Weight Watchers, Ikea, Kodak, Monster, The Home Depot, DuPont, Cingular Wireless, Philips, Levi Strauss & Company, Johnson & Johnson and Frito-Lay. Rafferty's undergraduate and graduate degrees are from Tulane and Boston University, respectively.
