ID: 147207

(firmenpresse) - FORT ERIE, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 05/16/12 -- The Grande Parade and Military Tattoo on June 23, 2012 will be one of the largest 1812 Bicentennial celebrations in North America, and General Rick Hillier will be there to salute the passing procession as the Honourary Parade Marshal.

General Hillier is the Former Chief of the Defence Staff for the Canadian Forces, the highest rank in the Canadian Forces. He held this position from February 2005 until his retirement in July 2008 after a 35-year long career in the Canadian Forces. This June, General Hillier will commemorate the War of 1812 as the Honourary Parade Marshal at the largest 1812 Bicentennial parade in North America.

The parade will take place in Fort Erie, ON, on the ground that was once the most contested site in North America during the War of 1812. To this day, Old Fort Erie holds the legacy as Canada's bloodiest battlefield. It also plays host to a mass gravesite, where 153 bodies are buried.

Throughout history, it was a post-war tradition that soldiers returning home were honoured with a grande military parade, a tradition that was never extended to the soldiers who fought in the War of 1812. On June 23, Fort Erie will pay tribute to these soldiers with a Grande Parade 200 years in the making. More than 50 bands from Canada and the United States will march down the streets of Fort Erie in military fashion to celebrate the soldiers of 1812 and the 200 years of peace that has since existed between Canada and the United States.

More than 1,000 re-enactors from the 1812 period will also participate, along with parade floats, antique cars, and unique displays. This two and a half hour long procession will be comprised of more than 4,000 participants. The parade will pass by the reviewing stand, where General Hillier and other dignitaries will salute the bands and floats. The parade will end at Beatrice Street near Old Fort Erie. That evening, the celebration will continue at Old Fort Erie with a traditional military style tattoo. The evening will conclude with a fireworks display designed to replicate the battle fought on the same grounds almost 200 years ago.

This event is designed to inform spectators about Canada's history, while entertaining them with a parade that is sure to intrigue viewers of all ages and interests.
