iFixit and Dozuki Founder Kyle Wiens Testifies at USITC Hearing on e-Waste for Federal Study
(firmenpresse) - SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 05/17/12 -- Kyle Wiens, co-founder of , iFixit, and its new sister site, Dozuki, spoke this week at a U.S. International Trade Commission hearing on used electronics exports. The hearing was an important source for a USITC study for the U.S. Trade Representative's office. Wiens was invited to participate based on his electronics repair documentation experience, , and his field research on e-waste.
Wiens in 2010 and has seen numerous electronics recycling facilities in the U.S. As he discovered, many devices that end up shredded or picked apart in scrapyards could have been repaired. A lack of repair documentation, however, is often a barrier to repair -- a problem that both iFixit and Dozuki aim to fix.
"As electronics have become more intricate, they have also become more difficult to repair," Wiens has said. "And getting the information necessary to repair is tough. Electronics manufacturers often use intellectual property laws to keep repair information proprietary. But manufacturers do have the detailed repair and disassembly instructions that would be invaluable to refurbishers: the repair manuals they write for their own technicians. Keeping this information secret costs jobs in America, costs jobs overseas, and contributes to the growing tons of toxic e-waste worldwide."
The U.S. International Trade Commission is a nonpartisan, fact-finding federal agency. Its investigation, Used Electronic Products: An Examination of U.S. Exports, was launched at the request of the Office of the U.S. Trade Representatives. The USITC expects its report to be final and available by Spring 2013.
