PRESS RELEASE

The European Commission welcomes
UITP as an Associated Partner to the
Covenant of Mayors initiative

The International Association of Public Transport (UITP) has joined the Covenant
of Mayors initiative as an Associated Partner to help cities go beyond the EU
energy and climate objectives.

Decarbonisation of urban mobility

Low- or zero-carbon mobility with low energy consumption is essential for a
sustainable future and competitive cities where people, businesses and culture
can thrive.

Since transport accounts for a substantial proportion of total urban carbon
dioxide emissions (CO(2)), specific targeted action needs to be made in the
transport sector if cities want to reduce their climate change impact and
improve energy efficiency.

Some 4000 cities all over Europe have voluntarily signed the Covenant of Mayors.
They are committed to implementing a sustainable energy action plan (SEAP) to
meet and exceed the EU 20% CO(2) reduction objective through increased energy
efficiency and development of renewable energy sources at the local level.

The partnership between UITP and the Covenant of Mayors will facilitate the
exchange of experiences and best practices in the development of low-carbon
sustainable transport solutions, helping to spur cities into action to reduce
their CO(2) emissions by at least 20 per cent by 2020.

If the share of urban trips made by public transport were to double by 2025,
emissions would be in line with European commitments while delivering clear
additional benefits for all. The Covenant of Mayors initiative provides an
opportunity to make this vision a reality in Europe by fostering joint
approaches and experience-sharing.
