Congress Moves on Important Measures for Biodefense and Public Health Emergencies
(firmenpresse) - LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 05/22/12 -- The Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA) Reauthorization moves to conference committee following unanimous approval by the U.S. Senate. According to Senator Richard Burr, R-N.C., the lead sponsor of the Senate bill, "We have come a long way in improving our nation's ability to respond to a bioterror attack or public health emergency... but the 2009 H1N1 pandemic underscored the reality that more remains to be done." The PAHPA Reauthorization bill will increase the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority's (BARDA) focus on developing innovative biodefense tools, and provide $2.8 billion for Project BioShield for procurement and development of medical countermeasures for chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear agents, including those for pandemic influenza for the Strategic National Stockpile.
Carol Linden, Principal Director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) will be the Feature Speaker at the 10th Annual Biodefense Vaccines & Therapeutics conference, June 5-8, 2012 at the Almas Temple Club in Washington, DC to lay out the agency's plans for medical countermeasures for Project BioShield and strategy for protecting public health against bioterror threats.
Dr. Linden will be joined by Keynote Speaker Dr. Gerald Parker, Deputy Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Chemical and Biological Defense at the Department of Defense, senior government representatives from CDC, DTRA, FDA, NIAID, JSTO, MIDRP, USAMRIID and WRAIR to discuss the government's plans and strategies for investing in prevention and preparedness against bioterrorism and major outbreaks of infectious diseases.
