A Disturbingly Low Percentage of Adult Americans Seek the Care of Dental Professionals; This, in Turn, Leads to Prominent Dental Conditions Such as Gum Disease, Which Go Unaddressed; The Team at Design Dental Group Is Astounded at the Low Number of Adults Trusting in Their Dental Care Providers; Additionally, the Office Is Encouraging Adults to Engage in Regular Screenings to Avoid These Health Conditions

(firmenpresse) - HOUSTON, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 05/23/12 -- The Wall Street Journal's MarketWatch.com that an astounding 40 percent of adults fail to undergo annual dental examinations, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). , which provides a variety of treatments and dental services to a diverse clientele, is urging its patients to continue to receive annual dental check-ups and encourage their friends and family to do the same.

The aforementioned report asserts that the majority of adults has gum disease and is not aware of this ill health: "According to the American Dental Hygienists Association (ADHA), nearly 75% of American adults are suffering from various forms of gum disease and are unaware of their condition."

This gum disease can prove extremely dangerous, as the article describes it as causing "other undetected oral hygiene concerns," including tooth loss. While some of these missed appointments are attributed to a phobia of dental care, there are several other causes of skipped dental appointments. For example, patients may skip a dental exam due to financial concerns, a lack of dental insurance, or the inability to fit an exam into a busy work schedule.

No matter why individuals miss their annual examinations, the fact remains that they are passing up an important healthcare service by refraining from scheduling regular check-ups. The consequences of gum disease are many. Aside from tooth decay, tooth loss, and other oral complications, gum disease is linked to heart health. Although the exact nature of the relationship between these two parts of the body is, as of yet, undetermined, research indicates that gum disease and heart disease are connected.

"It is extremely important for young adults to seek dental care, because oral health affects systemic health," commented Dr. Melanie T. Bibb, leader of Design Dental Group.

The team at encourages its patients to schedule annual exams and maintain proper dental care between trips to the office. Dr. Bibb and other dental professionals hope that the 40 percent of adults not currently under the care of a dentist will realize how important proper oral hygiene and dental care are.
