Seizure of Stun Guns Leads to Charges by the CBSA
(firmenpresse) - HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA -- (Marketwire) -- 05/28/12 -- A Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) criminal investigation has led to charges against a Nova Scotia man and the seizure of 32 illegal stun guns.
On December 2011, at the Vancouver International Mail Centre, CBSA officers intercepted a shipment of five stun guns destined for a Nova Scotia address. As a result of this interception, CBSA investigators in Nova Scotia, assisted by Canada Post's Security and Investigation Service, seized three additional international mail shipments that were found to contain stun guns, destined for the same address. In total, 32 stun guns were seized. A shipment containing 10 cans of pepper spray destined for the same address was also seized in May 2010.
On May 9, 2012, after an in-depth joint investigation with the Street Crime Unit of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police's (RCMP) Shelburne detachment, which included the execution of search warrants on a vehicle and residence, the CBSA laid 15 Criminal Code charges and five Customs Act charges against Scott Nickerson of Shelburne. The charges include five charges of smuggling under the Customs Act, and five charges each of possession of a prohibited weapon, importation of a prohibited weapon, and importation of a prohibited weapon without lawful authority under the Criminal Code.
"This is a significant seizure of dangerous prohibited weapons, and as a result, these stun guns and pepper spray won't be making their way onto Nova Scotia streets," said Andrew LeFrank, Regional Director General for CBSA Atlantic. "The CBSA continues to work alongside partners like the RCMP and Canada Post, to ensure that illegal smuggling activities like these are stopped in their tracks."
Stun guns and pepper spray are classified as prohibited weapons in Canada. With the exception of officials acting in the course of their duties, the Customs Act prohibits the importation of these weapons into Canada.
