(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 05/31/12 -- Today, the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, met with five Caribbean High Commissioners to Canada to reiterate Canada and the Caribbean's long-standing friendship and the on-going dialogue on development.

Attending the meeting were H.E. Michael Douglas Smith, Dean of the CARICOM diplomatic community and High Commissioner of the Bahamas, H.E. Edward Evelyn Greaves, High Commissioner of Barbados, H.E. Harry Narine Nawbatt, High Commissioner of Guyana, H.E. Sheila Sealy Monteith, High Commissioner of Jamaica, and H.E. Philip Buxo, High Commissioner of Trinidad & Tobago.

"We recognize that many Caribbean countries are facing significant economic challenges, as well as ongoing vulnerability to external shocks - all of which threaten development gains," said Minister Oda. "Our development cooperation, with its focus on promoting sustainable economic growth and enhancing security through strengthening the rule of law and better management of natural disasters, is helping to address the challenges in the region."

Canada's history and friendship with the Caribbean is strong and abiding. Both are British Commonwealth members in the Western hemisphere. Canada and the Caribbean have long-standing trade links and similar political systems, and belong to the same regional institutions that work to reinforce good governance, security and economic prosperity in the region. There are also strong personal ties as people from the Caribbean form one of the largest diaspora communities in Canada.

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) is an integral part of this relationship, working in partnership with the region on the priorities the region has set for its countries.
