Harper Government Working Internationally to Preserve the Integrity and Fairness of its Tax System

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 06/06/12 -- The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue met this afternoon with Mr. Pascal Saint-Amans, the recently appointed Director of the Centre for Tax Policy and Administration (CTPA) of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

"Our government is committed to ensuring the integrity and fairness of Canada's tax system," said Minister Shea. "I congratulate Mr. Saint-Amans on his appointment and look forward to building on Canada's long history as an active member of the OECD."

In particular, Minister Shea and Mr. Saint-Amans noted the success of the Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes in promoting the effective implementation of the international standard for the exchange of tax information. They also acknowledged the importance of various OECD projects aimed at preserving the integrity of countries' tax systems and the increased cooperation in the field of both tax policy and administration between the OECD and non-OECD economies. Minister Shea observed that she was pleased with the significant progress achieved in Canada to ensure the fairness and integrity of the tax system. She emphasized that the Harper Government would continue to look for innovative ways to improve compliance with Canada's tax laws.

"Canada has an extensive history of exchanging information for tax purposes, during which time it has established a strong framework to ensure the elements for effective availability and access to relevant information are in place," said Mr. Saint-Amans "and has made excellent progress since 2009 in negotiating Tax Information Exchange Agreements and re-negotiating its tax treaties to update the exchange of information article where necessary."
