FEC Complaint Filed Against U.S. Congressional Repulican Nominee Chris Stewart & Candidate Milt Hanks
(firmenpresse) - SALT LAKE CITY, UT -- (Marketwire) -- 06/18/12 -- A complaint was filed June 14, 2012 naming two U.S. Congressional candidates in Utah's 2nd District: Chris Stewart (currently the Republican nominee) and Milt Hanks of engaging in election fraud, allegedly collaborating in the mailing of an anonymous letter to state delegates, and falsely accusing four candidates of being involved in illegal activities and conspiring against Stewart.
Mark Braden of Baker Hostetler filed the complaint in Washington, D.C. at the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on behalf of the four wrongly accused candidates: Dave Clark, Cherilyn Eagar, Howard Wallack, and Chuck Williams.
The FEC complaint alleges that actions of the Stewart and Hanks campaigns altered the results of the election; that the Hanks campaign was a sham; and as early as February 2012, three weeks before Hanks declared his candidacy that Hanks stated his support for then candidate Chris Stewart and made libelous remarks against Clark, Eagar, Wallack, and Williams.
The investigation which was conducted by the Utah Republican Party after the State Convention cleared the four candidates in question of any wrongdoing but left unanswered questions about who sent the anonymous mailer. It failed to address evidence that the Stewart and Hanks campaigns collaborated to damage the other candidates.
Utah Republican Party Chairman Thomas Wright acknowledged in the report that an FEC violation had occurred and said he "strongly encourage[s] anyone who has information that would be helpful in determining who is responsible for the [anonymous] letter to contact the Federal Elections Commission [FEC]." Also included in the FEC complaint is Tim Stewart, brother of Republican nominee Chris Stewart. Tim Stewart was recently found guilty of orchestrating the "Temple Mailer," a similar anonymous mailing that came out days before the 2010 State Republican Convention that hurt then Senate candidate Mike Lee.
According to Clark, Eagar, Wallack, and Williams: "We have seen the harm this kind of politics has done to other candidates in the past and we agree it should not be part of Utah politics moving forward. This FEC complaint is an opportunity to clear not just our names, but to take a strong stand against future corruption and dirty campaign practices."
