Raising a Glass to Toast Canada's Birthday? Put the Keys Away, Say MADD Canada and Allstate Canada

(firmenpresse) - OAKVILLE, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 06/28/12 -- With July 1st falling on a Sunday this year, Canadians have all weekend long to mark the nation's birthday. MADD Canada and Allstate Insurance Company of Canada are asking people to leave the driving to someone sober if their Canada Day celebrations include alcohol or drugs.
"Whether you're joining your community's official Canada Day celebration, spending the weekend at the cottage, taking the boat out on the lake or hitting the trails this weekend, please keep safety in mind," said MADD Canada National President Denise Dubyk. "We don't want anyone to become another impaired driving statistic."
In Canada, between 1,250 and 1,500 people die in impaired driving crashes every year, and another 63,000 people are injured.
MADD Canada and Allstate Canada are urging everyone to help prevent impaired driving by:
"Despite the obvious risks, tragic consequences and safe available alternatives, people still drive impaired," said John O'Donnell, President and Chief Executive Officer, Allstate Insurance Company of Canada. "Allstate and its agents are committed to working with MADD Canada to promote sober driving and raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving so we can keep our families, friends and communities safe from this shameful practice."
Anyone hosting Canada Day parties this year should also be aware of their responsibilities and how they can ensure their guests don't drive impaired. Have food and non-alcohol beverages available, know who's going to be driving, have numbers available for taxis and be prepared to have intoxicated guests spend the night. Hosts should also take care not to serve or make alcohol available to anyone who is or may be intoxicated, nor should they encourage intoxication by serving extra-strong drinks, double shots or high alcohol content beer. For more information on the legal responsibilities of party hosts, visit MADD Canada's web site at for resources on host liability.
