Free Women's Health Conference Aims to Raise Awareness and Prevention Among Latinas in Los Angeles County
(firmenpresse) - LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 07/10/12 -- Latinas: Salud y Vida, a free, Spanish-language only women's health conference presented by Susan G. Komen Los Angeles County (SGKLA) and St. Vincent Medical Center, will take place on Saturday, July 14 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Vincent Medical Center. The fun and completely free event aims to bring local, no-cost, life-saving resources and services directly to the Los Angeles Latin community.
Latinas: Salud y Vida, which means "health and life" in Spanish, is an event that will feature a panel discussion and exhibit tables from 12 local hospitals, speeches by local physicians and dieticians to discuss breast health, risk factors, preventative measures and treatments and a presentation by keynote speaker and noted psychologist Dr. Ana Nogales. Participants will be referred to free local breast & cervical cancer screenings, including a clinical breast exam, mammogram and Pap test.
The event isn't just about the facts and services but also aims to bring the Los Angeles Latin community together to take control of their health and celebrate life. There will be a survivor celebration honoring three local Los Angeles breast cancer survivors, a pink ribbon raffle with tons of great prizes and an interactive dance break for in-between sessions. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for all participants.
"We at the Latina Task Force are looking forward to sharing information about breast health with the goal of not only raising awareness but also empowering Latinas to take ownership about their health and spread the word to others," said Laura Riley, a member of the Latina Task Force and a SGKLA community partner. "As a presenter from the Cancer Legal Resource Center, I look forward to sharing information about the free resources provided in Spanish and English that can help guide Latinas through the legal issues they might face when, for example, deciding whether to get screened for the BRCA gene or if they are diagnosed with breast cancer."
Latinas: Salud y Vida was originally launched in 2004 by the Latina Task Force due to the urgent necessity to raise awareness among Latinas regarding breast & cervical cancer early detection and prevention. Since its inception, Latinas: Salud y Vida has evolved into an annual event and travels to distinct communities throughout Los Angeles County where there is an extreme need due to the lack of adequate medical services and the presence of a large uninsured population. In collaboration with a multitude of community based organizations, including SGKLA, this event brings resources and services to a community that may not otherwise have access to preventative healthcare services.
