Old Films Help to Stir Memories for the Elderly, According to New Research

(firmenpresse) - LEEDS, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 07/13/12 -- A study, which aims to help people with dementia and other memory disorders, has found a link between archive films and memory. A number of carefully selected films form part of the Memory Bank project by the Yorkshire Film Archive (YFA)(i).

The 18-month research project works in collaboration with a number of charities for the elderly and the Alzheimer's Society. The films largely feature footage of home movies covering familiar topics such as sporting activities, holidays, school and working life.

The research shows that the films awoke old memories and stimulated conversations between participants on a number of topics; ranging from knitted bathing costumes to free school milk, 1960s fashion to favourite fireworks.

The study found that videos could be a fun and therapeutic way of triggering memories and improving the sense of personal identity among older people. The film archive could help the over 50s struggling with memory problems as the collection spans from the 1920s to the 1970s.

There are also a number of other ways to help memory stimulation. Here are a few top tips on how to keep your memory sharp later in life.

Eat well

A healthy diet can make a significant difference to memory performance. Soya rich diets have been found to improve mental health and memory.(ii) After just 10 weeks of a high soya diet, there was a noticeable improvement amongst short-term and long-term memory for participants. Foods, which are rich in vitamins C, A and E, are also considered good for memory and the brain.

Keep active

A number of scientific studies and leading industry experts believe that keeping active in a range of activities can help to stimulate the brain. These activities can be both physical and mental. The more ways that the mind is used, the more it will have to focus and concentrate. A few simple ways to do this would be to take up mental exercises such as a daily crossword or even ditching the calculator when working out personal finances.

Whilst you can never fully prepare any health issues later in life, you can take financial precautions. For example, can help cover funeral expenses in the event of your death.
