Minister MacKay Announces New Infrastructure Projects at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright

(firmenpresse) - CFB WAINWRIGHT, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 07/20/12 -- The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, today announced a major investment for infrastructure projects at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright. These projects will increase the efficiency of the base, will upgrade existing facilities in order to meet the demanding requirements of the Canadian Forces (CF) and will improve the operational effectiveness of the Canadian Army.
"The training done at CFB Wainwright is an important cornerstone in the development of our Canadian Forces personnel. The projects announced today will help further enhance the excellent level of training that our soldiers already receive," said Minister MacKay. "These announcements are not only positive for the Canadian Forces but also for the local community and economy."
Minister MacKay announced a $14.8 million contract to KellerDenali Construction of Edmonton, Alberta, for the renovation of five existing buildings and the construction of two additional buildings that will house the Opposing Force Facilities (OPFOR) at the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre. The Opposing Forces delivers collective training by providing realistic enemy forces during training exercises. This new facility will be 5000m2 larger than the existing OPFOR building, allowing for increased accommodation, storage, office and briefing space.
In addition, Minister MacKay announced a $39.3 million contract to Dowland Contracting of Edmonton, Alberta, to upgrade the Vehicle Maintenance Facility. This project will allow for the consolidation of all maintenance and support operations into a single facility. The existing 9000 m2 building will be renovated and an extension of almost 12 000m2 will be constructed to accommodate the updated Canadian Army vehicle fleet, which includes the Light Armoured Vehicle III and Leopard 2 tanks.
Finally, the Minister announced four contract awards totaling approximately $827 000 for various improvements to base infrastructure.
The work associated with these projects will create approximately 292 jobs.
In line with the Canada First Defence Strategy, there is a need to update and replace dated defence infrastructure in order to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The Government of Canada conducted an open, fair, and transparent competitive process to award each of these contracts.
