Scooter Sales on the Increase as Commuters Look for Ways to Save, says Swinton Bikes

(firmenpresse) - MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 07/23/12 -- The double-dip recession, an increase in petrol prices and rising rail fares have led to motorists looking for a cheaper alternative to their usual four-wheels, Swinton Bikes has found.
Quote data from Swinton Bikes - a leading broker of - shows an increase of 10% in insurance quotes for scooters.
It is thought that this increase is due to the recent hike in petrol prices, as well as commuters looking to save money by trading their car for a smaller, more fuel-efficient mode of transport.
Recent figures released by the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA) have shown that the number of new scooters registered with the DVLA rose by 12% in 2011 - with a staggering 20% increase in the number of larger 125cc motorcycle scooters registered.
Similarly, Peugeot announced that it has seen a 62% increase in the purchase of scooters in Greater London alone - a figure which could suggest that city-dwellers are looking for quick and easy ways to dodge the traffic during the 2012 Olympic Games.
Riders in London can also enjoy additional benefits with their two-wheeler - as all motorbikes, sidecars, scooters and mopeds are exempt from the city's congestion charge, and do not have to pay parking fees in designated parking areas.
With this in mind has carried out a comparison between scooters and cars, to outline the stark difference between these modes of transport when it comes to fuel consumption.
With the average unleaded price of petrol now topping 135.16 pence per litre and a the average 4 stroke scooter running at 70mpg compared to a car's 40mpg, it is easy to see that riding a scooter is more cost effective. Based on a motorist travelling 10,000 miles per year, a motorcyclist will save GBP 658.33 on fuel a year with a car driver paying GBP 1536.12 and a motorcyclist paying GBP 877.79.
Anthony Aronin, Head of Swinton Bikes, said: "With people looking to save money on their fuel and transport costs, it is no surprise that we have seen this kind of increase in insurance quotes for scooters.
"As these MPG figures show, riding one can prove to be far more fuel efficient than a car, and with scooters also being exempt of the London congestion charge, it makes sense that commuters would use this as a way to get around during the Olympic Games. Of course, scooters are also associated with lower-cost insurance quotes and when all these factors are put together a move to a scooter makes real economic sense."
