ACS Industrial Services Highlights Urgent Need for Technical Education Reform
(firmenpresse) - HUNT VALLEY, MD -- (Marketwire) -- 07/25/12 -- Computer science education within the United States is failing to meet the needs of the STEM industries. Some are questioning if the educational system can provide the level of instruction that tomorrow's professionals will need, but ACS Industrial Services believes that a reorganization of curriculum will address this major problem.
STEM industries, which include science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, are some of the fastest growing in today's economy. These fields have opened up jobs that the unemployed population desperately needs; however, most of the candidates in the job pool do not have the education necessary to complete these jobs. TIME has released an that questions whether or not the United States educational system can be "fixed" in an effort to meet the needs of the STEM industries. , a commercial and industrial electronics repair company, believes that a change in the core curriculum is a great step toward ameliorating this problem.
The major issue, as the article reports, is the discrepancy between what the country says is a priority and what its schools are teaching to their students: "Why the disconnect? If technology is, as the White House says on its website, 'an essential ingredient of economic growth and job creation,' why aren't we teaching kids how to create it?"
After looking at the curriculum of many schools, the article asserts that the issue is plain to see -- the educational system has not evolved with technology. Computer science classes have not changed in years, and many only offer instruction regarding word processing and other simple tasks. Furthermore, the gap in knowledge between basic computer science classes and more advanced courses, such as those in the Advanced Placement program, is so large that most students cannot excel in the more challenging course.
ACS Industrial Services states: "If Americans want to stay at the forefront of science and technology, globally, then we need to find a way to better foster these skills in young people. We need to engage kids in these skills at a young age and in a natural way, such as including computer science technology classes as core subjects rather than electives in our middle and high schools. The benefits of following through with this would be enormous."
Changing the core curriculum of the educational system is a major overhaul; however, it is thought by many to be one of the best solutions to the lack of STEM education. By encouraging more students to take STEM courses, even requiring them to, the United States educational system can prepare them for the jobs that will be available to them in the future.
