(firmenpresse) - BRAMPTON, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 07/27/12 -- On behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Lois Brown, Member of Parliament for Newmarket-Aurora, joined a large crowd of Canadians at the Korea Veterans National Wall of Remembrance, in Brampton, to mark the 59th anniversary of the cessation of hostilities of the Korean War.

The Korean War was one of Canada's most significant military engagements of the 20th century and it ended with the signing of an armistice agreement on July 27, 1953.

"The names of the 516 Canadians who made the ultimate sacrifice are forever memorialized on this striking wall of stone," said Minister Blaney. "We are grateful to them, as well as to the more than 26,000 other brave Canadian Veterans who served in Korea."

"We must continue to gather every July to honour the Canadians who made the ultimate sacrifice," said the Honourable Yonah Martin, Senator for British Columbia. "Those who fought for freedom and peace must never be forgotten and it is our duty as Canadians to remember their heroic sacrifices."

Canada, as a nation, is forever grateful to those young men and women who, in the prime of their youth, have served and continue to serve their country to preserve global peace and protect fundamental human rights. Many made the ultimate sacrifice, and lie buried in countries far from their homes and loved ones. Many have returned from service with injuries to body and mind that they carry with them for the rest of their lives.

"Our Veterans gave so much in the defence of freedom and democracy so that future generations can live in peace and freedom," said Member of Parliament Lois Brown. "In fact, Canada mad e a larger contribution, in proportion to its population, than most of the nations which provided troops for the United Nations multinational force."

The names of the 516 Canadians who died in service during the conflict are inscribed in the Korean War Book of Remembrance, located in the Peace Tower in Ottawa.

Many people gather each year at the Korea Veterans National Wall of Remembrance, in Brampton, as the monument honours all of the Canadians who fought in the Korean War.
