Former Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher Says Oral Health Should Be a Greater Priority -- and Dr. Gordon T. Austin Agrees With Him

(firmenpresse) - CARROLLTON, GA -- (Marketwire) -- 07/30/12 -- For many Americans, oral health is a term that involves such common, everyday acts of hygiene as tooth brushing, flossing, and the use of mouthwash. According to former United States Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher, however, oral health is much more than a matter of everyday hygiene. In a recent , Dr. Satcher lamented that Americans "have tended not to see oral health as a part of overall health and wellbeing." Continues Dr. Satcher, "Too often it is viewed as the teeth and the gums and nothing else." His comments have won the affirmation of dentists and oral surgeons across the country -- including Dr. Gordon T. Austin, an oral surgeon based in Carrollton, Georgia.

Dr. Austin has responded to Dr. Satcher's comments with a new statement to the press, offering his own assessment of the vital role that oral health plays. "Dr. David Satcher continues his heroic efforts, begun during his tenure as United States Surgeon General, to raise awareness about oral health as an important part of overall heath," says Dr. Gordon T. Austin in his press statement. "But like so many of the health miseries facing Americans, like obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease and many cancers, oral disease is largely preventable."

Dr. Austin continues by noting some specific examples. "Growth issues, like impacted wisdom teeth, trauma issues such as fractured teeth, and pathologic problems like jaw tumors are not preventable," he notes. "However, dental cavities and periodontal disease (gum disease) are almost entirely preventable with good oral hygiene, dental sealants, and fluoride."

For , the bottom line is simple. "Preventive care and education need to remain National Health Care priorities," says the oral surgeon.

Dr. Satcher, meanwhile, notes that good oral health is often predicative of good overall health, while poor oral hygiene can lead to a variety of health concerns. He notes that inadequate oral hygiene often points to an increased risk of infectious disease.

Dr. Satcher continues by observing that, while oral hygiene and heart health are not as closely associated as once thought, bad oral hygiene can lead to problems with the circulatory system.

Ultimately, both Dr. Gordon T. Austin and Dr. David Satcher believe that oral hygiene should be a greater area of focus among America's healthcare professionals. Satcher concludes by saying that good overall health initiatives, such as eating a better diet and avoiding cigarettes, can also help with oral health. "A lot of the preventative things we talk about for the preventative health of the body can help with overall oral health," he says.
