---------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Graz, 2. March 2010) In co-operation with its German subsidiary UIC, one
of the world's leading short-path distillation companies, BDI - BioDiesel
International has developed a plant concept for the obtainment of valuable
omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil. UIC's core technology is supplemented in
this context by the in-depth know-how available at BDI, the experienced
international plant manufacturer and specialist for the processing of
difficult oils and fats. The overall process enables this attractive field
to be entered. Further, BDI's strong financial resources also play a
crucial role in encouraging the company to tackle strategic new
assignments.
The source material for the production of omega-3 fatty acids is refined
fish oil, which already includes a higher concentration of EPA
(eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and therefore
contains special substances that promote health.
Demand for omega-3 products has developed very positively in recent years.
The market for plants designed to manufacture omega-3 fatty acids from fish
oil is global, because fish from cold waters have particularly high
proportions of usable fatty acids. The climatic conditions are suitable off
Peru and Chile as well as off Japan, Canada, Iceland and Norway.
The process - synergy benefits in technology and plant manufacturing
BDI has been using the multi-feedstock process it developed in-house and
then patented for the production of high-quality biodiesel since as long
ago as 1994. 30 plants have already been sold all over the world and are
processing raw materials of many different kinds, such as vegetable oils,
used cooking oils, animal fats or grease trap waste. The company's
extensive experience is now being exploited to process another raw material
that is of great interest to the biodiesel and fuel industry too: fish oil.
In the first stage of the process, the fish oils are transesterified to
obtain ethyl ester. Use is made of BDI's proven technology for this
purpose. In the next stage, the ethyl ester is distilled to the even higher
concentrations of EPA/DHA required by the market with the help of the UIC
short-path distillation process. BDI, in turn, has optimised an enzymatic
reesterification process, that is used as the third stage to obtain omega-3
fatty acids from the intermediate product manufactured in this way.
All the subsequent processing operations, such as deodorisation, bleaching
and winterisation, can be carried out for customers by BDI too.
The process outlined here converts about 30% of the raw material into
valuable omega-3 fatty acids. The other roughly 70% are an auxiliary
product, with which BDI can also achieve higher added value than in the
past.
Strong position - entire projects completed by the corporate group
BDI has been carrying out R&D projects at its own and major external
laboratories for many years and co-operates with external institutes and
universities. As is the case with existing products and technologies, work
is constantly being done on the development and optimisation of processes.
As a general contractor, BDI is in a position to exploit the extensive
synergy potential offered by the companies that belong to the corporate
group. It can therefore act as a single, integrated source for the
completion of entire projects, from individual sub-assemblies needed in
process engineering to complete plants (from planning and installation to
start-up and after-sales service).
High yield levels can be guaranteed in omega-3 production thanks to a
combined process involving the transesterification technology from BDI and
the short-path distillation technology from UIC. A process control system
from AutomationX, another company in the BDI Group, customised for this
particular application is used too. This also enables the entire
qualification and validation process to be covered for the food and
pharmaceutical industries, areas in which VTU Engineering, a further Group
member, has extensive know-how.

Omega-3 fatty acids - the market
The market for omega-3 fatty acids has developed very fast in recent years
and is expected to continue growing. These fatty acids play a major role in
the food and pharmaceutical industries in particular, because of their
positive impact on health.
Omega-3 fatty acids are used in the food supplement industry (often in the
form of capsules), in the pharmaceutical industry and in food additives,
e.g. in yoghurt, milk shakes etc.
