Reputation Changer: Scam Accusations, Online Defamation Can Prove Ruinous to Businesses
A Recent News Story Highlights the Toll That Negative Consumer Reviews Can Take on a Business; The Article Also Underscores Some of the Worst Ways in Which a Business Owner Can Respond; The Publication Has Won the Attention of Leading Reputation Management Agency, Reputation Changer
(firmenpresse) - NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 08/06/12 -- No business owner likes to receive negative feedback from customers, but thanks to the rise of online review sites like Yelp and Angie's List, destructive reviews are growing increasingly commonplace. A single bad review, published by a consumer to one of these review sites, can have potentially devastating effects for a business. To make matters worse, many business owners respond to these reviews too hastily, and ultimately heighten the situation. The Ottawa Citizen reports one such story, involving a restaurant owner who launched a two-year harassment campaign against a patron who had left a negative review. The restaurant owner ultimately ended up in court, facing serious charges -- but the incident won the attention of reputation management agency Reputation Changer. According to accusations and negative reviews can be damaging, but responding to them too hastily can magnify that damage many times over.
The company has responded to the Citizen's report with a new statement to the press. According to Reputation Changer CEO Cliff Stein, the story of the restaurant owner is all too typical. "There is no end to the negative reviews that populate these sites, to say nothing of the defamatory posts that throw around scam accusations and other libelous charges," confirms Stein. "We see this all the time, but what's really sad is how many business owners respond to these charges the way this one did. We all understand how maddening a bad review can be, but flying off the handle can make things far worse."
According to Stein, most business owners remain level-headed enough to recognize the folly of launching a two-year harassment campaign against online reviewers. Even so, business owners can still be very rash in their response. "A hasty, angry, or ill thought-out response only serves to make the business' reputation woes worse," warns Stein.
In fact, Stein says the best strategy is often to avoid responding to bad reviews and scam accusations at all. "The goal, for any business owner, should be to minimize the number of people who actually see that negative review," he observes. Responding to a negative review accomplishes just the opposite. "By responding to a bad review, the business owner is giving the review more traction in the search rankings," says Stein. "In effect, responding to a review makes it that much more visible and that much more damaging."
For Reputation Changer, scam accusations and negative reviews are handled in a more strategic manner. "If there were rumors that one of our clients was really just running a scam, or even if there were rumors of a , our response would not be to address those accusations head on," Stein explains. "Instead, we would seek to suppress the Reputation Changer scam rumors. We would work to bury those rumors under mountains of positive, brand-enhancing content."
The suppression approach is ultimately a more constructive way to deal with bad reviews, says Stein. "Rather than draw more attention to the negative review or the scam accusation, we minimize its impact, and make sure as few people see it as possible," concludes the Reputation Changer CEO. "We push it off the first page of Google search results, which means very few people ever see it. We make it a non-issue."
