According to the study, which is featured in the August edition of The Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers report that their efforts are the first to showcase the benefits of cataract surgery regarding fracture prevention. Conducted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Jules Stein Eye Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles, the study analyzed the records of approximately 400,000 patients who had undergone cataract surgery. When compared to data regarding patients who had hip fractures, it was determined that cataract surgery decreases the odds of a hip fracture by 16 percent.
Dr. Anne Coleman, Secretary for Quality of Care for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, states: "Our study suggests that people should never be regarded as 'too old' to have their cataracts removed. In fact, the greatest reduction in hip fracture risk was in patients who had cataract surgery when they were in their 80s."
Dr. William L.
