Boothe Eye Care Highlights Link Between Cataracts, Hip Fractures
A Recent Study Reveals That Cataract Surgery May Be a Successful Prevention Method for Hip Fractures in Elderly Individuals Who Suffer From Vision Loss; Boothe Eye Care Asserts That Improved Vision Can Significantly Enhance the Safety of Individuals
(firmenpresse) - PLANO, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 08/09/12 -- The Wall Street Journal that a recent study has revealed a link between cataract surgery and decreased hip fractures in Medicare beneficiaries. , an ophthalmologic office that specializes in treatment of conditions related to the cornea, asserts that improved vision can enhance the safety of individuals, and thereby prevent falls that lead to broken bones.
According to the study, which is featured in the August edition of The Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers report that their efforts are the first to showcase the benefits of cataract surgery regarding fracture prevention. As such, cataract surgery could prove integral in the prevention of falls in elderly individuals who suffer from impaired vision.
Conducted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Jules Stein Eye Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles, the study analyzed the records of approximately 400,000 patients who had undergone cataract surgery. When compared to data regarding patients who had hip fractures, it was determined that cataract surgery decreases the odds of a hip fracture by 16 percent.
Dr. Anne Coleman, Secretary for Quality of Care for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, states: "Our study suggests that people should never be regarded as 'too old' to have their cataracts removed. In fact, the greatest reduction in hip fracture risk was in patients who had cataract surgery when they were in their 80s."
Dr. William L. Rich, Medical Director for Health Policy at the American Academy of Ophthalmology and cataract specialist, comments: "When older people's vision improves following cataract surgery, they, their families, and society gain from the resulting reductions in suffering and medical costs. Ophthalmic research continues to demonstrate that cataract surgery is highly successful in terms of patient-reported outcomes such as improved vision and quality of life. The new study provides data on an important ancillary health benefit."
Dr. William Boothe, of , agrees that improved vision can provide a long list of benefits to patients, enhanced quality of life and safety among them. "Elderly patients who undergo cataract surgery are given the chance to see more clearly, which is an opportunity that has the power to boost their quality of life," states Dr. Boothe. "But with this increased vision comes increased safety, as these individuals can now see where they are walking and avoid accidents, such as falls, that would cause hip fractures and other health concerns."
