Students and Campus Crime Return for Fall -- Eight Tips for Campus Security Officials
Remote Visual Surveillance Company Netwatch Offers Safety Tips to Keep Students Safe as College Begins

(firmenpresse) - BOSTON, MA -- (Marketwire) -- 08/14/12 -- As students return to class, so does campus crime. The good news is that, according to the Department of Education, on-campus burglaries and robberies as a whole have been declining since 2007, partly due to advances in campus safety technology. Netwatch USA, with campus safety expertise across four continents, today announced eight tips to curb campus crime as students return to school.
"Students are sometimes vulnerable, which makes them targets for criminals," says former Boston Police Commissioner and Netwatch board member Kathleen O'Toole. "To counteract this, effective monitoring can be a campus security asset for a wide range of attacks -- from physical assault to property crime."
Remote surveillance company Netwatch has prevented countless campus crimes. Here are tips from CEO David Walsh to help campus safety officials keep students safe as the 2012 school year begins.
Make sure all students are aware of current security procedures. Do you have a mobile text alert system? Send out notices to make sure everyone knows what to do in a case of emergency.
Ensure that all corners of your campus are well-lit. Bright pathways are less attractive to potential criminals.
More trees and bushes make it easier for criminals to hide and avoid being seen by cameras.
In Netwatch's experience, most crimes on campus are committed by guests of students; not students themselves.
By creating a solid relationship with the local town police force, campus police can have a greater chance of effectively responding to a serious emergency on campus.
Have a fellow security official with you or have campus police meet you there.
Features like license plate identification and thermal imaging can not only help catch intruders and vandals once they've committed a crime, but can also prevent the crime from even happening.
Bring in experts to find out if your security plans are up to snuff and to ensure they are as cost-effective and prevent crime as well as they can.
"With today's technological capabilities, crime prevention has reached a whole new level," says Walsh. "By combining physical security measures such as guards, emergency phone stations and video surveillance with IT solutions like video analytics, we're able to actually prevent incidences and campus crime rates will continue to drop."
With more than 35,000 crimes prevented since inception in Ireland in 2003, the Netwatch system deploys the most advanced video processing technologies to alert its Communication Hub to unacceptable behavior on a client's property. Intervention Specialists direct operations through remote CCTV monitoring and intervene as soon as security is breached by alerting the intruders they are being watched and the police have been informed. You can find Netwatch online at and on Twitter at .
Established in 2003, Netwatch currently employs 122 staff and from its Carlow Communication Hub, monitors in excess of 25,000 cameras across the globe. Netwatch was the first company in Europe to combine specialist video processing technologies with satellite communications to provide safe, preventative, immediate and cost effective protection solutions for clients. With over 35,000 crimes prevented since start-up, the Netwatch system deploys the most advanced video processing technologies to alert its Communication Hub to unacceptable behavior on a client's property. Live personalized audio warnings are issued to intruders preventing criminal activity. Heavily invested in R&D, Netwatch is committed to remaining the leader in the field of remote visual surveillance and thanks to the vast advancements in its proprietary software (Veritas externally and Cratos internally), Netwatch now operates in four continents with clients across Europe, South Africa, the Middle East and the USA.
