Viewfinity Urges Organizations Not to Wait for Cybersecurity Executive Order or Legislation to Pass in Order to Protect Valuable Data Assets

Organizations Must Evaluate Data Infrastructure and Take Appropriate Steps to Protect It, Starting With a Least Privileges Policy

(firmenpresse) - WALTHAM, MA -- (Marketwire) -- 08/20/12 -- In the wake of the U.S. Senate's failure to pass a cybersecurity bill earlier this month, Viewfinity CEO Leonid Shtilman is urging businesses and organizations of all sizes not to wait for specific cybersecurity legislation before implementing security technology, policy and training designed to protect valuable corporate and organizational information, data and applications. His company, Viewfinity (), is a leading innovator of privilege management solutions.

"Along with the U.S. Senate's opposition, it is true that not all technology companies support all the details of the cybersecurity legislation. However a good example of support is the activity within The Silicon Valley Leadership Group, representing more than 375 companies, for the need to establish a clear rule which will protect this country from cyber threats," said Shtilman. "The most popular argument against this legislation is that it will be too expensive to implement the requirements.

Cybersecurity threats affect companies and organizations of all sizes, from large business enterprises to small and mid-sized businesses. We encourage every organization to evaluate their IT data infrastructure and take the appropriate steps to protect it and adequately train the people who use your data on ways to keep it safe."

According to a recent study by the Ponemon Institute, the average breach costs a company $5.5 million or about $194 for each record that is hacked. Bloomberg reported in 2011 that the average breach cost $7.2 million. Depending on its business, the cost of a security breach could put an organization out of business and expose the hacked company to millions of dollars in litigation.

The U.S. Senate voted 52 to 46 in favor of the recent cybersecurity bill, which would have established security standards designed to thwart large-scale cyberattacks on the nation's critical infrastructure, which was short of the necessary two-thirds majority necessary to advance it for a final vote. With most of the nation's critical computer networks running the nation's power, water, transportation and communications overseen by the private sector, President Obama encouraged the bill to pass the senate in an Op-Ed in the Wall Street Journal.

Viewfinity believes it is important to establish a rule either through legislation or executive order that every company should implement the "least privilege principle" -- provide employees with the minimum rights needed to perform their business functions. Barring legislative action or an executive order from the President, common business sense requires companies to establish policies to protect their business networks, applications and valuable data.

Viewfinity provides privilege management and application control for desktops, laptops and servers, empowering enterprises to meet compliance mandates, reduce security risks, and lower IT costs. The Viewfinity solution allows enterprises to control end user and privileged user rights for applications and systems which require elevated permissions. Viewfinity's granular-level control enables companies to establish and enforce consistent policies for least privilege Windows-based environments based on segregation of duties.
