According to a recent study by the Ponemon Institute, the average breach costs a company $5.5 million or about $194 for each record that is hacked. Bloomberg reported in 2011 that the average breach cost $7.2 million. Depending on its business, the cost of a security breach could put an organization out of business and expose the hacked company to millions of dollars in litigation.
The U.S. Senate voted 52 to 46 in favor of the recent cybersecurity bill, which would have established security standards designed to thwart large-scale cyberattacks on the nation's critical infrastructure, which was short of the necessary two-thirds majority necessary to advance it for a final vote. With most of the nation's critical computer networks running the nation's power, water, transportation and communications overseen by the private sector, President Obama encouraged the bill to pass the senate in an Op-Ed in the Wall Street Journal.
