U.S. Hotel Owners Are Hopeful That the Upswing in the Economy Will Result in Better Business; Comfort Inn Capital Beltway Discusses What an Increase in Hotel Business Would Mean for Room Rates

According to a TripAdvisor survey, only 16 percent of hoteliers believe they will have to lower rates this year due to a decrease in sales. The United States is the fourth largest nation for hoteliers and is expected to benefit the most from this shift in the economy. In the last six months, 30 percent of U.S. properties participating in the survey said they were extremely or very profitable. According to the article, the United States is showing greater hotel profits than any other nation.
For Greg Miller, Managing Director for PMHS and the , improved business means an improved economy, which would benefit more than just hoteliers. Miller states, "Washington, DC area hotels had enjoyed a better recovery during 2010 than that experienced for most of the country. But actions of the Executive Office in 2011 put a damper on government travel, which is an important segment of the demand base for hotels. These actions persisted into 2012 and even became more stringent with the surfacing of GSA scandals focused on elaborate seminars and travel junkets."
Miller adds that, "Because the demand base is softer for most weekdays, pricing on hotel rooms is actually better today than it had been in 2010. This means great value for travelers particularly as DC hotels had already made significant improvements to their physical plant in anticipation that the worst had passed regarding the recession.
