Press release - Grontmij creates impressive bridge in Frankfurt

De Bilt, 22 August 2012 - Today Grontmij will enhance the infrastructure of
Frankfurt am Main, one of Germany's major cities, with a brand-new bridge. The
impressive 175-metre Eastern Bridge over the River Main will be moved into
position today, connecting two parts of the city that are currently being
revitalised. In 2006, Grontmij Germany worked closely together with architect
Ferdinand Heide to take first place in a competition for the bridge's design.
Grontmij was then awarded the contract for final design, the building permission
application, the detailed design and management of the tender process.
The Eastern Main Bridge is part of Frankfurt's urban development programme. By
2015, an estimated 17,000 vehicles will be using the bridge daily. Three
roadways and two combined sidewalks and bicycle paths will enable drivers,
pedestrians and cyclists to co-exist peacefully while enjoying the beautiful
views over the river Main and the Frankfurt skyline.
Jochen Ludewig, director of our Transportation & Mobility business line in
Germany, says: "The onshore construction reduces costs and ensures quality.
River shipping traffic will only be interrupted on two days and the single
construction parts can be bigger in comparison with lorry transportation. As
environmental sustainability plays an important role in this project, we decided
to ship the steel we needed to the construction site, thereby reducing carbon
dioxide emissions."
Grontmij country managing director in Germany Ina Brandes is proud of the
project: "It demonstrates perfectly our ability to present state-of-the-art
solutions for urban transportation. The new-build bridge fits seamlessly into
our European 'Highways and Roads' growth segment. We are an important player in
this field in Germany with decades of experience and in the future we will
further strengthen our position in this market."
The moment when the heavy steel construction is manoeuvred into position will be
a spectacular event. Yesterday and today, 22 August 2012, 2,200 tons of steel
