Restoration Industry Association Provides Disaster Preparation Tips for Residents Impacted by Tropical Storm Isaac

(firmenpresse) - ROCKVILLE, MD -- (Marketwire) -- 08/27/12 -- Residents impacted by Tropical Storm Isaac should make some preparations to protect their property ahead of the storm. The Restoration Industry Association (RIA) recommends the following to reduce flood damage:

Businesses should maintain a moderate stock of emergency supplies: plastic tarps, wet-pickup vacuums with wands and floor attachments, absorbent wipes and floor squeegees provide a primary level of protection at a moderate cost. Rapid response is the key to damage control. The ability to swiftly deploy tarps over computers, production equipment, file cabinets and other critical components can dramatically curtail the extent of damage.

Inspect every area around the home or office and assess its vulnerability to water. Nothing but furniture and durable equipment should be stored directly on the floor.

Paper records and items are instant casualties. Move them to filing cabinets, off of furniture and floors, or store them in plastic containers. Store important papers in a protected area on the highest floor in the house.

Make sure drains and gutters are clear of debris. Ensure that all downspouts drain away from the building's foundation.

Secure furniture, outdoor umbrellas, trashcans and anything else that could become a projectile during heavy winds. Place plywood or storm shutters over windows.

Take photos of each room and save them to a CD and print hard copies. Keep one set to take with you and a second set off site (e.g., safe deposit box, relative's home). This provides a digital inventory of the major contents and what they looked like prior to any damage.

If possible, elevate fuel tanks and the main fuse box above the anticipated flood level so floodwater won't damage utilities.

Back up computers and keep the information where it's easily accessible in an evacuation as well as at an offsite location. (This is particularly important for individuals who work from home.)

Charge cell phones, laptops, tablets, etc. in case the electricity is out for a few days.

Know your evacuation route and leave low-lying areas.

Identify an individual outside of the emergency area as the "family contact" and make sure everyone knows their phone and email in case the family is separated.

Make sure a disaster supply kit includes photo ID cards for all adults, as well as current photos of any children.

During the storm remain indoors, stay away from windows or glass doors, and monitor weather bulletins for the storm's progress.
