Columbia County Broadband Chooses Cyan for Software-Defined Fiber Network
Network With Centralized Software Control to Deliver Critical High Speed Ethernet Services to Public Safety, Community and Private Institutions

(firmenpresse) - COLUMBIA COUNTY, GA and PETALUMA, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/05/12 -- today announced that the Columbia County Broadband Network, a county-wide middle mile fiber project providing broadband connectivity to the community, has selected Cyan Z-Series packet-optical transport platforms (P-OTP), the Cyan 360 software-defined operations suite for intuitive service and multi-vendor network management, and CyNOC professional services to build a high speed fiber network in Georgia. The project is designed to address underserved businesses and residents in the region by adding 220 miles of new fiber cable, and includes seven wireless towers that will extend the Columbia County Sheriff's Office radio network. Cyan's software-defined metro network solution also incorporates interoperability and software control of Accedian Networks Ethernet NIDs to provide a fully integrated multi-vendor solution. With these enhancements, the network will directly connect to 150 community institutions and serve as an open platform for last mile service to support over 60 free wireless access points in public spaces.
According to Lewis Foster, broadband manager at Columbia County Community Broadband Utility (C3BU), "Our goal is to improve the responsiveness of public safety agencies, and the efficiency of city and county governments while also increasing health services and public connectivity including all levels of education. Cyan's software-defined metro network solutions and enhanced support services provide us with a turn-key installation and the ability to manage any network disruptions as they arise. Cyan's solutions, team and first-class support organization have been indispensable in helping us improve the overall quality of life for our residents."
Columbia County will use Cyan Z-series P-OTPs to cost effectively deliver Ethernet services at speeds up to 10Gbps to critical service institutions including the Sheriff's Office, the Medical College of Georgia, the Board of Education, schools, libraries, senior centers and community centers. The Z-Series platforms support the ability to drive performance assured Ethernet services with multiple 10G and future 100G wavelength services per fiber using dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM). C3BU required a software-defined metro network operations model to offer a dependable and scalable fiber optic network with low total cost of ownership.
The county will construct and connect high-speed fiber and Ethernet services to seven wireless towers that will be available for lease by wireless service providers to reach the 60 percent of the service area that is currently underserved. Columbia County will also lease fiber and offer Ethernet services to other service providers so they can provide high speed connectivity to homes and businesses. Cyan Z-Series supports fiber-based Ethernet transport services to cell sites for tower backhaul, offering resilient 10GbE switching and transport over DWDM. The county will employ CyPortal for multi-layer service level agreement (SLA) verification, and CyNOC Enhanced operations center service with turn-key installation and on-site training for ease of deployment and management.
"C3BU will cost-effectively deliver Gigabit Ethernet services to Columbia County's geographically dispersed region of 40,000 households and 4,900 businesses that currently lack sufficient access to health and safety services," said vice president of North American sales, Eric Clelland. "We will provide the county with Cyan's software-defined metro network solution, backed by CyNOC professional services to assist with scaling network services as their citizens' public safety and community needs evolve."
