UN at transport logistic 2009

ID: 1805

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Food Programme (WFP) will be represented at transport logistic between 12 and 15 May 2009. Messe München is supporting the UN´s humanitarian aid projects by providing it with exhibition space free of charge.

(firmenpresse) - The global development network (UNDP) and the World Food Programme of the United Nations Organisation will be taking a joint stand in the exhibition area at Air Cargo Europe. There they will be exhibiting alongside over 200 air cargo companies, airports and cargo interchanges in a fully booked Hall A4. By taking part in this forum, the UN is hoping to attract partners for its worldwide aid projects. The UNDP commissions logistics and service companies operating by air, water, road and rail for UN peace-keeping initiatives and political missions worldwide. Currently there are around 30 political and peace missions. The total value of goods and services in transport and logistics that were processed in 2008 was around 1.122 billion US dollars.

The second exhibitor – the World Food Programme – has an annual transport budget of one billion US dollars with which it organises deliveries of food aid to 82 countries. Each year the WFP distributes over three million tonnes of food to approximately 100 million people around the world. The majority of WFP programmes are aid and supply transports for disaster relief in places like Sudan, Afghanistan, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. To meet its additional mandate of ensuring safe and reliable air travel capacity for humanitarian purposes worldwide, the WFP has also set up passenger air services in over 15 countries where otherwise no commercial airlines operate. With the support of WFP/UNHAS (United Nations Humanitarian Air Services) a total of 360,000 disaster-relief workers were able to help suffering people in 2008 in Sudan, Somalia, Afghanistan and ten other countries.
