The comprehensive modernisation and renovation of Germany’s once highest building (159 metres) was completed by the end of 2010. Hundreds of tons of waste materials had to be disposed of in the course of the energy renovation and architectural redesign of the building.

(firmenpresse) - South west facing photovoltaic elements now cover the entire short side of the building. They are not only supposed to emphasise the building’s energy optimisation, but also improve its overall CO2 footprint. The result is a resource-saving and energy-efficient skyscraper which the European Commission certified as „Green Building“. This project was also awarded the German Solar Prize 2011 by EUROSOLAR e.V. in the category of “Owners or operators of renewable energy installations”.

Vanguard Design
The monotonous grid design of the building envelope was replaced by undulating storey bands so that the skyscraper, which was built in 1976, now reflects the spirit of the time. Horizontal mouldings, spaced at slightly different distances from the elements, add vividness to the facade and give it a three-dimensional look. Lindner demounted the old spandrel glazings and replaced them with 6,500 new, anthracitecoloured
spandrel panels. Furthermore, Lindner installed new, thermally insulated pilasters with integrated guides for building cradles on top of the existing aluminum frames and marked, disassembled, cleaned and repainted thousands of square feet of metal cladding, furnished them with additional wind bracings and returned them to their original position.

State-of-the-art Photovoltaics
Altogether, 20,000 square metres of curtain wall and 10,500 square metres of rainscreen cladding had to be renovated. The exterior facade now achieves a U-value of 1.1 W/m²K which is 25 % less heat transfer than is required by the EnEV 2007 (German Energy Saving Ordinance). Extensive simulations and calculations confirm the efficiency of the building’s energy renovation, resulting in a significant reduction of energy consumption. In comparison with the situation before renovation, the building now consumes 36 % less primary energy, the result of which are annual saving of nearly 2,500 tons of CO2 emissions. Integrated vertical LED strips and a total of 10,500 solar cells with a peak power output of up to 22 kW clearly accentuate the building’s edges and are one of the main reasons for its high efficiency.

Facade types and scope
- 12,000 m² installation of insulated spandrel panels
- 10,500 m² removal, recoating, reinstallation of rainscreen cladding
- 2,000 m² removal, recoating, reinstallation of ventilation louvers
