U.S.English Chairman: Texas Congressional Debate in Spanish Sends Wrong Message

(firmenpresse) - WASHINGTON, DC -- (Marketwire) -- 09/11/12 -- U.S.English Chairman Mauro E. Mujica today released the following statement upon hearing that a debate in Texas' Congressional District 23 will be taking place in Spanish.

"In the State of Texas, nearly 3 million Spanish speaking residents are only able to speak English 'less than very well,'" Chairman Mujica said. "As a native Spanish speaker myself, I know firsthand that the best way to become fluent in English is to be immersed in it. As candidates running for a federal government office, these contenders should instead debate in English, serving as examples of the doors that open upon learning the common language of the United States. There is nothing wrong with maintaining one's fluency in Spanish; however, English is the key to success in the United States, and all government representatives, at the local, state and federal levels, should stress the importance of becoming fluent in it."

According to the Amarillo Globe-News, the debate between Republican incumbent Francisco Canseco and Democratic challenger Pete Gallego will take place on September 25.

U.S.English, Inc. is the nation's oldest and largest non-partisan citizens' action group dedicated to preserving the unifying role of the English language in the United States. Founded in 1983 by the late Sen. S.I. Hayakawa of California, U.S.English, Inc. () now has more than 1.8 million members.
