Although Apple and Samsung Currently Dominate the Smartphone Market, Sony Recently Announced Plans to Develop Within the Field by Incorporating Its Gaming and Audio Expertise; Despite Sony's Challenges, Simply Electronics, Online Retailer, Anticipates the Development

(firmenpresse) - NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 09/17/12 -- While the consumer smartphone market is saturated with Apple and Samsung products, a recent from Bloomberg Businessweek suggests that other electronics contenders have plans to add to the competition. According to the article, Sony has announced plans to make improvements within the smartphone industry by incorporating the company's expertise in gaming and audio features. is excited by Sony's move, but having tracked customer trends through its online retail sales, adds that Sony must face many obstacles before becoming a contender in smartphone technology.

In the article, Keita Wakabayashi, an analyst at Mito Securities Co. in Tokyo, states, "Even though Sony has been slow to expand in smartphones, there are still chances to catch up with competitors, given the market has plenty of room for growth. Sony needs to use its experience in making a range of popular products such as games and audio players to come up with smartphone models that can attract more customers." Although, Sony has strengthened its name through its Playstation products, Simply Electronics notes that the smartphone market is not necessarily targeted toward serious gamers. The online retailer adds that if Sony wants to succeed in the smartphone market, they must focus on the growing consumer base of casual gamers that the industry currently targets.

However, the article also suggests that Sony may be following a plan similar to that of Samsung. It states, "Sony's full-year sales target for smartphones trails Samsung's quarterly sales of the devices, which allow users to perform a range of functions including reading books online and shooting high-definition photos." In response, Wakabayashi of Mito Securities comments, "How Samsung is making money at its smartphone operation suggests there is similar potential for Sony. It may be the only realistic area that can drive Sony's growth, as there is little sign for the TV market to recover and other electronics businesses are also grim in terms of profit."

While the future for Sony and smartphones remains to be unseen, the article notes that currently its Xperia handset "[does not] rank among the top five brands globally." In a recent press statement, Simply Electronics concludes, "It'll be interesting to see how Sony's attempts at recovery will pan out with such strong competitors in the market. Indeed, they have strong experience in gaming and audio, but judging from recent performances on products such as their Xperia Play smartphones, it seems like a tough battle. Nonetheless, we are excited to see what new innovations Sony can come up with, and we here at Simply Electronics expect to continue supporting their range of phones for years to come."
