Three Cancer Survivors to Be Recognized as 2012 Honored Heroes at the 1.5 Mile Walk to Raise Awareness and Funds for Blood Cancers

(firmenpresse) - SALT LAKE CITY, UT -- (Marketwire) -- 09/19/12 -- The annual Salt Lake City Light the Night Walk, which is sponsored by the Utah office of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society® (LLS), will take place on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, in Sugar House Park at 7 p.m. The event features a 1.5 mile leisurely walk where participants carry illuminated balloons on behalf of survivors, supporters, and loved ones who have been lost to cancer, helping bring light to the dark world of cancer.

Families, friends, co-workers and individuals will join together for an evening of fun and inspiration as they walk to make a difference in the fight against cancer. Participants will enjoy food and entertainment with a true Western flair with masters of ceremonies the Hired Guns, Craig "Creek" Johnson and Lannie "The Marshall" Scopes. Registration begins at 4:30 p.m. with the walk at 7 p.m. For more information or to register, visit or call 801-281-6618.

This year, the Utah LLS community will honor three individuals who represent the more than 1 million Americans currently living with blood cancer. Amy Moore, Zack Forbush, and Tommy Hasleton represent the reason why more than 2,000 people will walk on Oct. 13.

- Only two weeks after delivering her first son, who was premature and subsequently spent 52 days in the newborn intensive care, Moore was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. She immediately began a six-month regiment of chemotherapy. She and her son drew on each other's strengths to overcome their battles together. Now, seven years later, Moore has welcomed a baby girl into the family, continues to run her dance studio, Studio 56 Dance Center in Murray, and encourages life to "bring it on."

- In the winter of 2007, Forbush began feeling tired and weak. Within a few months, he could hardly walk up the stairs. After a doctor's physical, he received the diagnosis of leukemia. He was referred to an oncologist and learned 95 percent of his cells were leukemic and he was in the hospital within a few hours. After five cycles of chemotherapy and two bone marrow transplants, Forbush is back enjoying the ski slopes and golf course. While his body continues to struggle with graft versus host disease, he's grateful to be enjoying his time as a husband and father.

- An energetic, funny, and kind-hearted boy, eight-year-old Hasleton has been running ever since he knew how. At age 4 1/2, he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). For the past 3 1/2 years, he has undergone multiple rounds of chemotherapy and steroids, completing his treatments in February 2012. He acted like any boy his age, participating in a list of sports. But he's learned some valuable life lessons at a very young age and continues to live life to its fullest.

More than 2,000 participants are expected to participate in the walk with a goal of raising $300,000 to fund LLS support, informational resources, and financial aid programs for blood cancer patients and survivors, as well as research. The organization has contributed $2.5 million to five active research projects at the University of Utah.
