Threading and Mehndi Now Beauty Mainstays

The fresh style was the product of a small group of entrepreneurs who brought the ancient practices of mehndi and eyebrow threading, originating in the Far East, to salons and malls in the United States.
Far East beauty traditions are becoming increasingly popular, thanks to eyebrow threading franchise Ziba Beauty. Once only eastern beauty traditions, threading and mehndi are the franchise's core services that drive the thriving business.
"Americans don't give much thought to where nail polish originated. No one remembers the practice originated in China," said Sumita Batra, Ziba Beauty's CEO. "The same is true for threading and mehndi. When we introduced the beauty practices more than 24 years ago, we had no idea the customs would gain popularity so quickly."
Batra's mother, Kundan Sabarwal, was introduced to threading at age 15 in her native Iran and taught her daughters, Batra and Suman Patel. After relocating to the United States in the early 1980s, the family opened the first Ziba Beauty studio in 1989.
In a short time, the location attracted 10,000 clients monthly. Ziba Beauty expanded to 16 studios to meet the demand, servicing Eastern clients, Americans and celebrities alike. The studios expanded services offered to also include traditional mehndi -- or henna, as it's often called -- and glitter mehndi, non-permanent tattoos.
Today, 15.6 million Americans pay to have their eyebrows shaped at mall studios and kiosks each year. One million of those eyebrows are shaped at Ziba Beauty. Gentler on the skin than waxing, threading doesn't leave unsightly skin discoloration or breakouts.
"Threading gives our clients a nearly pain-free option for hair removal and they thank us for it," Batra said. "We're happy we can provide them with comfort and a quality service."
Ziba Beauty is launching a national expansion with a goal of opening several hundred new locations. Its current franchises have a long track record of generating good revenue and the total investment for franchises starts at $249,000.
