Funders Seek Increase in Success Measures, According to Sage Nonprofit Insights Survey
Survey Report Reveals Top Nonprofit Trends and Practices in Funding and Grant Management

(firmenpresse) - IRVINE, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/27/12 -- Sage North America today announced the results of its recently conducted Sage Nonprofit Insights survey of U.S. and Canadian nonprofit organizations, which focused on identifying top trends and practices in funding and grant management processes.
As competition for funds increases, more than half of the organizations responding to the survey (56%) said grantors are demanding more success measures (also called "impact measures" or "outcome measures") than two years ago. This number is up 4 percent from last year's survey. The survey results also showed a slight shift in the types of success measures grantors most often request information about. Number of constituents served (77%) edged out financial accountability/stewardship (76%), which had the top spot in last year's survey. Program sustainability (59%) and program quality from a participant perspective (54%) were the next most requested success measures.
"Nonprofits are being held more accountable as competition for available grants increases, and organizations are expected to do more with less money," said Krista Endsley, senior vice president and general manager of Sage Nonprofit Solutions. "Funders want to see the impact their contribution is having -- who is being served and how."
The survey also revealed an increase in funding from government grants and contracts. Nonprofits surveyed reported that approximately 52 percent of funding would come from this source, up 6 percent from last year. Other funding sources included fee for service (12%), individual donors (11%), and private foundations (8%).
Some other notable findings from the survey include:
When it comes to the types of funders pursued by organizations, 37 percent of the survey's respondents cast a "fairly wide net based on contacts, funds available, etc.," while 32 percent pursue the "few, engaged funders who are totally aligned with their mission," and 24 percent try "everywhere they can reach."
84 percent of organizations seeking an engaged funder for a multiyear application are either "very successful" or "somewhat successful" in doing so.
An executive summary of the survey and results is available here . The online survey was conducted among Sage nonprofit customers as well as members of the Grant Professionals Association during May and June of 2012 and had a total of 853 participants.
