Alberta Innovates Partners on Wood-Based Auto Parts Research Project
New technologies and markets open for Alberta companies

(firmenpresse) - BANFF, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/03/12 -- Auto parts from wood that are strong, light-weight and low-cost is the aim of a new applied research project. Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions, among other partners, is investing $600,000 in this project, which may help respond to consumers' desire for better auto fuel efficiency and green innovation.
"The auto parts from wood fibre project will increase Alberta's scientific and technical capacity," said Dr. Stan Blade, Chief Executive Officer of Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions. "It will also allow Alberta companies an early opportunity to diversify into new markets."
Other funders include the Centre for Research and Innovation in the BioEconomy (CRIBE) and Magna Exteriors and Interiors. "Development of new technologies for the emerging bioeconomy is complex," said Blade. "We are fortunate to have partners that can provide additional research capacity and who understand the market need."
In phase one, researchers will test different wood fibres for integration into the auto parts using a blend of Alberta and Ontario wood fibre to achieve best performance. Technical experts from Alberta Innovates Technology Futures will assist Magna in the testing.
In phase two, researchers will modify the technologies for application beyond the auto sector to products from other manufacturing industries such as pallets or packaging materials.
Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions is a provincial government agency that leads and coordinates science and innovation to grow prosperity in Alberta's agriculture, food and forestry sectors.
