Naxos of America Launches Distribution of Orfeo

Founded in Munich in 1979, Orfeo has achieved its current international standing thanks to the consistency of its policy towards repertoire and artists. Its earliest recordings were issued under license to RCA and EMI, but by 1982 the company was producing and distributing records under its own name. Famous artists have done much to ensure that since the beginnings of the label at the start of the digital age, it has maintained a consistent presence in the marketplace. Orfeo has always worked diligently to make sure that familiar works and interesting rarities, including world premieres, are made accessible to wide audiences in outstanding performances.
No matter the classification, the same high standards are applied to Orfeo's many series which include music of the 20th century as well as standard classical repertory. Two series that focus on the 20th century are the label's Contemporary Song Edition, and Musica Rediviva, which concentrates on works by composers who were either banned or who have been unjustifiably forgotten. Orfeo is also known for its series Orfeo d'Or which showcases great historical performances, some of which feature artists of the stature of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Rafael Kubelík who also made new recordings with the company during their lifetimes. By working closely with the artists and institutions involved in the original releases or, alternatively, with the heirs of the artists in question, Orfeo d'Or has ensured exclusive access to the best possible original sources.
