Food Banks Competing in Challenge to Get the Most Donations in the Great Canadian Food Fight!
Food drive challenge helps to raise awareness of hunger and raising food to run from October 11-13, 2012

(firmenpresse) - HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/11/12 -- In an attempt to see which organization can raise the most food and financial donations, The Mustard Seed Food Bank, The Regina Food Bank, The Food Bank of Waterloo Region and FEED NOVA SCOTIA will be competing for bragging rights in this year's Great Canadian Food Fight.
The Great Canadian Food Fight is a food drive challenge between community food banks to see which one can raise the greatest amount of food over a three day period.
"The Regina Food Bank may be the long standing champion for four years running, but now that we are competing, they are going to get a run for their money!" says Wendi Campbell, Executive Director of The Food Bank of Waterloo Region, the newest participant in the challenge
The good-natured spirit of friendly competition is an added element of fun to an event that raises food donations and also creates very positive exposure, public relations and awareness to the ongoing needs of food banks at the community level. "We've been doing this for 25 years, and we have a lot of experience at running community-wide food drives" says Brent Palmer of the Mustard Seed Food Bank in Victoria, B.C. "However, what we are really excited about is not only the quantity of food, but also the quality of food that we will be able to bring in."
Dianne Swinemar, Executive Director of FEED NOVA SCOTIA, and Steve Compton, Chief Executive Officer of Regina Food Bank, share in the enthusiasm and are eagerly counting the hours until the scales open.
Starting at 6pm on October 11th, each competing region will collect and weigh as much food as possible in a 48 hour period. There will be two overall titles awarded - Most Food (Total Weight) and Most Food Collected per Capita (population based on 2011 Statistics Canada data). Best of all thousands of people will benefit from this food drive as the event has successfully raised over 280 tons the past years.
The winners will be announced on Saturday, October 13, 2012 along with the total amounts of food raised in each community. Get regular updates at and by searching #GCFF on Twitter.
