Nearly Two Fifths of Women Don't Feel They Get Enough Time for Themselves Men Are Most Likely to Set Aside Time for Themselves Everyday vs. Once a Week for Women

(firmenpresse) - LEEDS, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 10/18/12 -- The vast majority of Brits regularly long for just a little break in our hectic lives, with over 98% of the UK population feeling it's important to make time for themselves, according to new research from . The study has shown that women are the worst at taking time out with nearly 36% saying they don't get enough time to themselves versus 27% of men.

The direct bank also found that nearly two fifths of women feel their partner has more leisure time than they do. The majority of women set aside time for themselves just once a week (22%) whereas a majority of men (28%) make a point of organising activities for themselves up to seven times a week. However, some men seemed to realise they were onto a good thing with nearly half saying they had more 'me' time then their partners.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, those in a relationship are less likely to set aside alone time for themselves. Nearly two fifths of those in a relationship felt they didn't have enough time to relax or engage in activities they enjoy. Children also have an effect, but it seems that after the first child parents get better at managing their time with fewer saying they didn't have enough free time with their second (36%) and third child (32%) than with their first (37%) compared to 26% for those without children.

When it comes to how they spend their spare time men and women are equally likely to spend it relaxing (70%). However, women are more likely than men to read a book, see friends or cook and men prefer to watch TV, listen to music or go to the pub. Men are more likely than women to play computer games and regularly exercise whereas women are more likely to spend their spare time going to the cinema or theatre or on personal grooming/spa sessions.

Top five preferred activities for men and women

Natalie Cowen, Head of Brand at first direct commented:

"It can be difficult to set aside time for ourselves, so any time we can claw back from our daily tasks is invaluable. Banking doesn't rate highly in most people's list of favoured things to do with their time, so we pride ourselves on being able to help our customers speedily and at a time convenient to them - 24/7, so they can spend more of their free time doing what they enjoy."
